Sangai: The Dancing Deer of Manipur
Manipur is a land of remarkable natural beauty, rich traditions and unique wildlife. Among its most treasured symbols is the Sangai, the rare brow-antlered deer that is found naturally in Manipur. Known affectionately as the Dancing Deer, the Sangai is the state animal and an important part of Manipur’s identity.
The Sangai is particularly associated with Keibul Lamjao National Park, situated in the southeastern part of Loktak Lake. What makes this habitat extraordinary is its floating vegetation, locally known as phumdi. These floating masses of vegetation provide the deer with a distinctive natural environment found nowhere else in the world.
Why is the Sangai called the Dancing Deer?
The Sangai has a graceful appearance and distinctive antlers that extend forward from its forehead. When it moves across the soft, floating phumdis, its careful and delicate steps create the impression of a deer dancing on water.
This unusual movement has earned it the popular name, Dancing Deer of Manipur.
A rare treasure that needs protection
The Sangai is an endangered species and its survival depends on the conservation of its natural habitat. Keibul Lamjao National Park is therefore not simply a tourist destination. It is an important conservation landscape that supports one of Manipur’s most distinctive wildlife species.
The history of the Sangai also reflects the importance of conservation. Once believed to have disappeared, the deer was rediscovered in the early 1950s, drawing attention to the need to protect its remaining habitat.
The Sangai Festival: Celebrating Manipur
The Manipur Sangai Festival takes its name from this remarkable animal. The festival was launched in 2010 to showcase the state’s cultural diversity, indigenous traditions, handloom, handicrafts, music, cuisine and sports.
More than a celebration, the festival represents Manipur’s connection with its natural heritage and the many communities that make up the state.
For visitors, learning about the Sangai offers a meaningful introduction to Manipur. It is a reminder that the state’s identity is closely connected to its wildlife, landscapes and living traditions.
