Among the many natural treasures of Manipur, the Shirui Lily holds a special place. Found naturally in the Shirui Hills of Ukhrul district, this rare flower is the state flower of Manipur and a symbol of the region’s unique biodiversity.
Every year, the flowering season attracts nature lovers, photographers and travellers to the hills of Ukhrul. The Shirui Lily Festival celebrates this remarkable flower while highlighting the cultural heritage, landscapes and traditions of the region.
The 5th State-Level Shirui Lily Festival 2025 was held from 20 to 24 May 2025, organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Manipur.
What is the Shirui Lily?
Scientifically known as Lilium mackliniae, the Shirui Lily is a rare flowering plant native to the Shirui Hills of Ukhrul district. The flower is known for its delicate pinkish-white petals and bell-shaped blossoms. It grows naturally in its mountain habitat and is closely associated with the ecology and identity of the region.
British botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward encountered the flower in 1946. It later gained international recognition at the Royal Horticultural Society’s flower show in London in 1950.
The flower’s restricted natural habitat makes its protection especially important. Conservation awareness is therefore an essential part of the festival.
